Rethinking the Interior Door: A Paint-Free Approach

Interior doors are often one of the final elements chosen in a renovation or new build. In many projects, they are still installed unfinished and painted on site — a method that has been standard practice for decades.

Internationally, interior doors are increasingly designed as complete, pre-finished systems rather than unfinished products requiring on-site painting. At ORIBS, we are introducing a new type of door technology to New Zealand — one that rethinks how interior doors are manufactured, installed, and maintained.

What Are Painting-Free, Pre-Finished Interior Doors?

No-paint, pre-finished interior doors are manufactured with their final surface finish already applied at the factory. Instead of arriving raw and requiring on-site painting, the door leaf, frame, and trims are delivered to site ready for installation. This reduces difficulty for both carpenters and painters. For example, this minimizes the requirement for highly skilled carpenters to achieve alignment, consistent gaps and operation without scraping floor coverings.

Once installed, the door is complete — there is no need for painting, drying time, or secondary finishing work. For many homeowners and builders, this represents a shift away from traditional door installation methods.

Reduced Site Work and Simpler Coordination

One of the key advantages of no-paint, pre-finished interior doors is the reduction of on-site work and trade overlap. In traditional construction practices, unfinished doors and frames are often installed early, requiring them to remain on site while multiple trades continue to work around them.

Because no-paint, pre-finished interior doors do not require on-site painting or finishing, they can be installed later in the build sequence — after painting, flooring, or tiling has been completed. This approach significantly reduces the risk of physical damage, eliminates the need for touch-ups or replacements, and simplifies coordination between trades, resulting in a cleaner installation process and a more predictable project timeline.

Cost Efficiency Beyond the Door Itself

While pre-finished doors may initially appear different in cost compared to unfinished alternatives, the overall project cost often tells a more complete story.

By removing the need for on-site painting, projects can reduce:

  • Painting labour and materials

  • Touch-ups caused by construction damage.  Common issues include drywall installation can place pressure on door frames, leading to deformation or misalignment, subsequent tiling and flooring works may scratch or damage door leaves and frames.

  • Delays related to drying and rework. Simplified tasks reduces the overall construction time.

For homeowners and developers alike, this can result in a more predictable and manageable budget.

A Different Approach from Traditional Painted Doors

Traditional painted doors rely heavily on on-site workmanship. The final appearance can vary depending on environmental conditions, paint application, and the number of trades involved.

Pre-finished doors take much of this variability out of the process. Finishes are applied in controlled manufacturing environments, allowing for more consistent colour, texture, and surface quality across all doors in a project. This difference is especially noticeable in homes with multiple internal doors, where uniformity plays an important role in the overall finish.
