The Logic of Magnetic Door - System Thinking through use

A door is experienced through use. It is opened, guided, and closed repeatedly throughout the day. The quality of this experience depends on how it behaves at the moment it meets the frame.

This is where the logic of a magnetic latch becomes relevant.

Closing Is a Process

A door does not close instantly. It moves toward the frame, aligns, engages, and settles. In conventional latch systems, this process relies on impact. A protruding latch meets resistance, creating contact noise and mechanical rebound.

In a magnetic system, engagement is achieved through attraction rather than collision. Magnetic engagement relies on alignment. It does not compensate for movement, distortion, or poor installation. As a result, it places greater emphasis on precision in the surrounding system. At this point, the insulation strip absorbs remaining closing force, helping to minimise slamming noise and complete the closing action smoothly. The door is guided into position, and the closing action is resolved more gradually. The difference is subtle, but noticeable in everyday use.

Sound as an Outcome of Control

Sound is a useful indicator of how a door is performing. Abrupt sounds often suggest impact or vibration, while controlled sounds indicate alignment and stability.

Magnetic engagement does not remove sound entirely. Instead, it changes the type of sound produced by reducing direct collision between components. When paired with proper alignment, sealing and our customized insulation strip, the result is a quieter and more controlled closing action.

When these elements are coordinated, the closing moment feels consistent rather than accidental — a result of system thinking.
